22 July 2024 (MANCHESTER) – Human Appeal, the Manchester-based humanitarian aid charity, has called for increased support for Sudan as the country’s 14-month war is having devastating humanitarian consequences.
The charity estimates that Sudan urgently needs $2.4 billion to provide food, sanitation, shelter, health care and water to displaced communities.
Sudan currently has the highest number of internally displaced people ever since the conflict broke out in April 2023, with 7 million displaced and an estimated 13.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to aid agencies.
However, 26% of them were reported to be female, while the figure was as high as 48% for children.
The most pressing needs of the Sudanese people are food, sanitation, shelter, health care and water. More than 9.8 million people are facing severe food shortages, while 27 million are in urgent need of sanitation and shelter due to prolonged conflict, economic instability and unprecedented climate impacts such as drought, flooding and irregular rainfall.
“We are witnessing a devastating tragedy in Sudan. Displaced communities urgently need support to protect them from life-threatening diseases, hunger and water shortages. Humanitarian Appeals has been working in Sudan for 32 years but more support is needed from communities and the government,” said Owais Khan, Deputy CEO of Humanitarian Appeals.
He added: “We hope that the current UK International Development Secretary Anneliese Dodds will also do more to resolve the Sudan crisis in the coming months.”
Likewise, a general shortage of medical equipment due to a lack of funding and medical infrastructure means that the Sudanese people face deadly outbreaks of malaria and cholera.
The charity, which is based in the UK and currently operates in Khartoum, Uttar Pradesh, Sennar, Blue Nile and North Kordofan states, called on the public and government to take action to urgently support the people of Sudan and provide life-saving assistance.
