(LPL/CNN) – A federal judge in Texas temporarily blocked a plan promoted by the Joe Biden administration on Monday to benefit from the Undocumented Spouses and Stepchildren of U.S. Citizensafter 16 Republican-led states sued over the measure.

U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker Stopped Implement an initiative called “Keeping Families Together,” which stems from a Biden executive action and took effect on August 19.

The measure allows certain undocumented spouses and stepchildren of U.S. citizens to apply for temporary residence permits and then apply for permanent residence without leaving the United States, as they normally would.

In his ruling on Monday, the judge suspended the measure for 14 days and gave both sides time to present arguments before a hearing to analyze his court order.

The lawsuit, filed by 16 states led by Texas, said state governments spend “significant amounts of money” providing services such as health, education and safety to these people.
