Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Helzer said midfielder Matt O’Leary will need ankle surgery after being injured nine minutes into his club debut on Tuesday.

Danish player O’Leary has moved from Celtic to Brighton in a deal reported by British media to be worth £25 million ($33 million). O’Leary injured his left ankle when he was tackled by Jay Williams during Brighton’s 4-0 win over League One side Crawley Town in the second round of the League Cup.

“He needs ankle surgery. I can’t say how long he’ll be out,” Heltzler told reporters Thursday.

Crawley head coach Scott Lindsay apologised after the game for the tackle which injured O’Reilly.

Lindsay told reporters: “Maybe our action was a bit too aggressive, maybe the referee didn’t notice (the provocation), I apologize to everyone here… I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

Brighton have beaten Everton and Manchester United in their first two Premier League games and are level on points with Arsenal, who they travel to on Saturday.
