Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Brazing (Joint venture) meeting European Union The Delphi portal learned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell agreed that it is necessary to provide support to Ukraine and contain Russia in the long term.
Blazer thanked Borrell for his steadfast support for Ukraine and his efforts for peace and stability in Europe.
She stressed that the EU should be united and consistent in its stance and should continue to provide timely military, financial and political support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Brazer stressed that the EU should be strengthened and NATO Cooperate to address global geopolitical challenges, including in Ukraine.
“The problem for the international community is Russia, whose policy is war. We must jointly take all possible measures, including expanding sanctions against Russia and Belarus and effectively enforcing existing sanctions, to make it impossible for Russia to restore its military capabilities and capacities, because this would mean a threat to the EU and NATO,” she stressed.
Brazer positively evaluated the approved 14th round of sanctions against Russia and the 8th round of sanctions against Belarus.
The minister also stressed that the EU should carry out the next round of sanctions urgently and in a timely manner.
Also, during the meeting, Blaser informed Borrera about her two-day visit to Latvia’s eastern borders, the EU and NATO, as well as visits to customs and border control posts on the borders with Russia (Trekhova) and Belarus (Partenki).
The Foreign Minister stressed that Latvia and its responsible services invest a lot of money and work in order to effectively implement sanctions and prevent the possibility of circumvention of sanctions by conducting high-quality controls on the external borders of the EU and NATO affairs.
“The security of the EU’s eastern border is of paramount importance – it is the first line of security guarded by the responsible authorities in Latvia. Currently, this work is being carried out with increased intensity – both in terms of financial and human resources. Moreover, the fact is that 80% of the goods crossing the borders of Russia and Belarus do not come from Latvia, but from other EU countries. Currently, Latvia is responsible for controlling sanctions, but this burden should be shared among all EU countries,” Blaser explained.
Officials agreed that stricter controls on shipped goods should be ensured both in the country of origin and in the country of customs declaration.
Borrell invited Brazy to brief foreign ministers on what he saw and heard during his visit at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday, July 22.
Borrell and Brazer also discussed the situation in the Middle East during their meeting.
