St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Nevis Prime Minister Mark Brantley called on the public to take the health of the environment seriously and stop littering during a press conference on Tuesday.

Littering has become a serious problem on the island, from the careless dumping of plastic and Styrofoam containers to trash thrown from moving vehicles.

“Stop throwing trash out of your car windows as you drive by. If you are drinking or eating in your car, wait until you are near a trash can before throwing out your trash,” Brantley pleaded.

His strong call came against the backdrop of a recent competition held by the island for the best preserved village to remove rubbish from the community. However, the rubbish found was non-biodegradable.

“I remain very concerned about the number of plastic bottles and Styrofoam containers that are thrown from vehicles as people drive by. I encourage our people, please say Nevis is good, because it is good,” Brantley said.

Any form of littering is illegal. According to the Solid Waste Management Act:

(1) No person shall—

(a) discarding garbage in a public place other than a container for the purpose prescribed in Article 48 or a place designated for the purpose prescribed in that Article;

(b) depositing garbage in a public place at any time other than the prescribed hours for the deposit of garbage.

Meanwhile, the Best Preserved Village competition is highlighting the importance of keeping communities clean across the island as Nevis ramps up its tourism efforts.

“The Best Kept Village competition. Judging took place on Monday 15th July and the competition has concluded successfully. There were six villages in total, three small villages and three large villages. The small villages were Cades Bay, Westbury Village, Barns Ghaut Village and Cox Beaumont Montpellier Estate. The large villages were Jessop’s Village, Brown Hill and Hanley’s Road. The winner of the Best Kept Village competition and the large village was Hanley’s Road and the Best Kept Village winner for the small village was Barns Ghaut. We would like to take this opportunity to recognise the groups who assisted in the clean up of their respective areas. Their participation in this competition and the hard work and effort they put in to keep their community clean is truly commendable.”

He continued: “We congratulate Empire Sports Club for helping with the refurbishment of Hanley Road and winning the Large Village category in the Best Preserved Village competition. Let me add that the judges were very impressed with the group’s work on the replanting and mural painting next to Hanley Road bus station. We also congratulate Barnscott Community Development Improvement Club for helping with the refurbishment of Barnscott Village and winning the Small Village category in the competition.”

Brantley praised those who showed civic pride and community awareness by ensuring their surroundings were clean.
