Hope Week and Challenge begins this Tuesday (July 9)day 2024.
Organised by the Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA), the event aims to bring together the continent’s future stars under the age of 12 to hone their skills and compete. The event will be held at the Botho Multipurpose Hall in Gaborone.
BTTA Public Relations Officer Tshego Malepa-Motshabi said the event will be held in two formats. The first is a training workshop for players from the nine teams.day to 13day A competition will be held on July 14day July 2024.
Malepa-Mochabi said the training sessions will be led by Eva Jeler, a coach from the United Kingdom, who was described as “an experienced coach who is well-known for developing young table tennis talents.”
“The purpose of holding training sessions for the developing players is to ensure they acquire key skills to enable them to compete in the tournament. The aim is to have them all on equal footing when the actual tournament begins on the 14th.day “July,” she explained.
BTTA PRO said Jelle’s expertise and guidance “is expected to be of valuable assistance to the contestants in the face of intense competition.” Countries competing alongside Botswana include South Africa, Togo, Benin, Guinea, Uganda, Rwanda, Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt.
All ten countries have qualified for the tournament from their respective African regions. South Africa arrived early Sunday morning, with Benin and Uganda arriving early Monday morning. The rest of the teams are expected to arrive later Monday, with the final group of participants expected to arrive on Tuesday morning. Botswana reported to training camp on Sunday.
Botswana has four competitors, two girls and two boys, including Boitlamo Nkele and Masa Motlhabane in the under-12 girls category, and Reneilwe Lekorwe and Tinashe Dzvaka in the under-12 boys category.
“Lekwe and Nkele qualified through the regional tournament held in Namibia. Motlabane and Dwarka, on the other hand, qualified through the automatic qualification spot given to Botswana as the host nation,” Malepa-Mochabi explained.
Meanwhile, a BTTA spokesperson said they expect a very competitive match when the under-12 players meet on the final day of the Continental Hopes and Challenges Week. The players who win the Challenges are expected to represent their continent at the World Hopes and Challenges Week organised by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
The 2024 ITTF World Hopes & Challenges Week will be held in Asuncion, Paraguay, from 1 to 7 November 2024. At least 40 players (20 women, 20 men) from all continents will participate in the world event, which is expected to include an intense week of table tennis training, educational sessions and a final Hopes & Challenge.
