“We didn’t expect this because it’s something we see in others but not in us. These guys who are selling ice to these young people are very important people in society. Both in the church, in associations. The fathers who are selling these, they have their lives in order.” She wishes to remain anonymous.
“I think that kids now in school, middle school, 12 or 13 years old are being exposed to this stuff. It disgusts me. You even end up threatening certain people. You know it’s dangerous for your children. Even my husband is surprised. He sometimes says ‘I want to kill them’. For what? Because you know there’s a danger! », she added.
A resident of the island
Another woman also agreed to testify under the condition of anonymity. Because his companion, although well integrated into society, is now dealing. As the days passed, she no longer knew the father of her child. A man became violent and he himself was a victim of threats to repay drug doses. What prompted him to speak: the fear of death and the fear of being seen as an accomplice.
« I really don’t know how to help my husband anymore. I can’t do it alone, because he doesn’t want to know. It’s true that normally I should blame him, but I don’t want to do that. Today, I would rather give up, leave with the children, and protect myself, than go into the coffin » She confided.
Behind all these testimonies, fear of retaliation predominated. There was also a sense of distrust of the municipal police.
« I know why I joined the city police force, and I hope all of my colleagues know why they applied. We are sworn agents. They know what they risk if they stray from the right path. But I humbly know that I am a person of integrity. I strive to be fair every day, and I think people know that. », agrees Steven Jeva.
According to him, the leaders of the brigade admit that it is difficult to filter the large number of arrivals of boats or sailboats, which are the main medium of traffic.
