The restless and defiant Bong Kalindo, the leader of a pressure group calling itself “Malawi First, People First”, has warned that he will mobilise Malawians to hold demonstrations against voter registration and new tax measures by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and National Registration Bureau (NRB).

Kalindo and his team at a press conference

Kalindo told a press conference in Lilongwe today that the MRA was introducing excise stamps on various products to increase tax revenue and discourage consumption of goods that were unhealthy.

Kalindo, however, argued that the initiative would harm business interests and called for a moratorium on its implementation to pave the way for consultations.

He further stated that his organization is against the use of national ID cards in voter registration and is demanding the use of other alternatives such as birth certificates.

“We therefore give the MRA, NRB, MEC and the Malawi government 10 days to investigate these relevant issues affecting the people of Malawians.

“Malawi First has no choice but to call for demonstrations across the country,” Kalindo said in a statement.

Kalindo has been vehemently opposing the economic and political governance of the Tonse coalition led by President Lazarus Chakwera over the past few years.

A few days ago, he was charged with conspiracy to disturb public order and was eventually acquitted.
