BoB calls on government to use battery minerals to develop electric vehicles

The Bank of Botswana (BoB) has highlighted Botswana’s potential as a key player in the electric vehicle industry and value chain amid a rapidly changing energy landscape and transition towards low-carbon technologies.

The Bank of Botswana notes that “five of the six major minerals used in electric vehicle rechargeable batteries: cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium and graphite” are produced in Botswana. A recent report released by the central bank states that “it has been observed that the global electric vehicle battery market is expected to grow, mainly due to the growing demand for renewable energy. This makes Botswana a potential contributor to the battery material supply chain and a hub for electric vehicle battery manufacturing.”
