Earlier today, police announced they had arrested a 26-year-old man and charged him with Thorpe’s murder.

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin, who is overseeing the investigation team, said police had made a breakthrough yesterday.

“Our investigation progressed rapidly yesterday afternoon and a suspect was detained near the homicide scene.

“We have charged the man with the murder of Stephen.”

Police are not looking for other suspects.

“This is a positive development in the investigation, but our work is not done yet,” Baldwin said.

“I know people will ask why this happened to Stephen and it is now important for our team to piece together all the information so that the judicial process can proceed as planned.”

The work will involve collecting and analysing further CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.

“Officers will still be working in the community as part of an ongoing regional investigation and we still need anyone with relevant information or CCTV to contact us.”
