The high-end cake shop will exit Melbourne and focus on its Sydney store due to tough operating and economic conditions.
Black Star Pastry – a high-end Sydney-based bakery known for its tiered cakes Strawberry Watermelon Cake – announced that its three Melbourne stores will close this weekend. The last day of trading will be Sunday, August 18.
The Black Star team shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday and issued a statement to the media.
“After entering the Melbourne restaurant scene in 2019 … Black Star Pastry has made the difficult decision to cease operations in Melbourne,” the statement read.
“Post-pandemic, tougher trading conditions and economic conditions have led to rising costs, coupled with industry-wide staff shortages, and the company will return to its previous operating methods with a cohesive team in NSW.
“This decision will allow Black Star Pastry to scale back its operations and focus on its home business in Sydney, where it will continue to grow and develop.”
The three stores in Melbourne are located in Ackland Street, St Kilda, Driveway in Melbourne CBDand internal Chadstone Shopping Centre – will cease operations next week.
However, stores in Sydney’s Newtown, CBD, Rosebery and Chatswood, as well as pop-up stores in Sydney’s Burwood and Broadway, will remain open.
