Biodiversity initiative: Green Liberal Party support

Liberal delegates spoke in support of the biodiversity initiative. The decision was made at an online rally on Saturday with an absolute majority of 59% and 31% against. One in ten delegates present wanted to allow a free vote. The people will vote on the initiative on September 22.

Beat Flach, a national councillor for canton Aargau, said he was pleased that delegates had made clear their support for protecting biodiversity and that Switzerland must act to halt losses in the sector.

The Green-Liberal parliamentary group agreed. The party’s steering committee also approved the project, but decided in favor of freedom of voting. The proposal was the subject of a separate vote. Freedom of voting has been explicitly rejected.

The decision followed intensive discussions between supporters and opponents of the initiative, who argued that the text was primarily concerned with the protection of landscape and heritage and that its proposals were “too radical”.

The subject is the focus

Zurich State Councillor Tiana Moser declared that biodiversity is at the heart of the Green Liberal Party’s concerns, while Bern National Councillor Catherine Bergh stressed that the loss of biodiversity is one of the greatest risks to economic development.

Party chairman Jürg Grossen, who voted against the bill, explained that global warming is a fact and that the nature of diversity can help stop it. He pointed out that healthy forests and intact bogs absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide. The Bern National MP added that the party remains strongly committed to preventing species from disappearing.
