June 29, 2024 – Panicked Democrats are speculating whether to replace Joe Biden as their party’s nominee for US president after his disastrous debate performance sparked rumors about his age and health.

Biden’s shaky, hoarse performance against Donald Trump in the first presidential debate in Atlanta on Thursday was widely panned as a disaster, and rather than allaying concerns about his mental acuity, it amplified them on the biggest political stage.

Even before the agonizing 90 minutes were over, top Democrats and donors began frantically calling and texting about the possibility of drafting a belated Biden alternative at the Democratic National Convention in August, even as elected officials remain publicly loyal to the president.

“Every Democrat I know is texting this and saying this is terrible,” Ravi Gupta, a former campaign aide to Barack Obama, wrote on X. “Just say it publicly and then start working to create space for the selection process at the convention. I’ll vote for Corpse over Trump, but this is a suicide mission.”

Biden appeared at a campaign rally in North Carolina on Friday and delivered a more forceful performance, delivering more powerful lines than he had the night before and attacking his opponents with vigor.

“Did you see Trump last night? That set a new record for the most lies in a single debate, honestly,” Biden told the enthusiastic crowd, which spontaneously chanted “Four more years.”

He questioned Trump’s lies about the economy, the pandemic and the Jan. 6 insurrection, calling Trump a “one-man crime wave” and adding: “What bothers me most about him is that he has no respect for women or other people. “The law.”

Biden also reiterated his long-standing campaign promises to restore abortion rights and defend Medicare and Social Security, adding, in a nod to their debate, which drew cheers from the crowd: “When you get knocked down, you get up again.”
