U.S. President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid on Sunday as fellow Democrats lost confidence in his mental acuity and ability to defeat Donald Trump, plunging the presidential race into uncharted territory.
Biden said in a post on X that he will continue to serve as president and commander-in-chief until the end of his term in January 2025 and will address the nation this week.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden wrote. “While I have always wanted to run for re-election, I have determined that it is in the best interests of the Party and the country for me to step down and focus on the remainder of my term as President.”
By dropping his bid for reelection, he cleared the way for Vice President Kamala Harris, the first black woman in U.S. history to run as the No. 1 candidate. Biden, 81, did not mention her in his announcement.
It is unclear whether other senior Democrats will challenge Harris for the party’s nomination – Harris is widely seen as the choice of many party officials – or whether the party itself will choose to open the field.
Biden’s announcement came after Democratic lawmakers and party officials publicly and privately pressured him to drop out of the race following his disastrous performance in a televised debate with Republican rival Donald Trump last month.
