President Biden gets hero’s welcome on first night of Democratic National Convention He passed the torch to Vice President Harris. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but for 50 years, I’ve served you to the best of my ability.” Biden told a cheering Chicago crowd Harris received a five-minute standing ovation for her speech, after her attempts to speak were drowned out by cheers and cries of “Thank you, Joe” as soon as the speech began. Harris also unexpectedly appeared early to praise Biden, whose speech was largely a reflection on his legislative achievements since taking office.

Thousands of protesters march in Chicago against Israel’s war in Gaza The Democratic National Convention opened yesterday. Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling said the department has a respectful working relationship with protest leaders and looks forward to supporting marchers’ free speech rights without any problems.

NPR’s Martin Kaste says protesters tore down sections of fence and told other protesters to follow them. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Israel has agreed to a proposed ceasefire in the Gaza war. After declaring Israel’s support for the deal, Blinken called on Hamas to also back it. Netanyahu has not directly said he supports the new proposal put forward in Doha last week.

Hamas responded to the proposal rather negatively with a statement, saying it pandered too much to Netanyahu on several key sticking points, and they blamed him outright for standing in the way of the deal. Egypt is expected to host renewed ceasefire talks later this week. Qatar is home to some Hamas officials, so Blinken will likely be there to urge Hamas to sign the deal.

Nearly half of all hospitals in the United States are tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations that provide health care to the community. But despite their community-centric missions, the CEOs who run these nonprofits make an average of $1 million a year. The highest-paid CEOs work for hospital systems with the highest financial returns, the researchers found. This raises the question of whether nonprofit health systems achieve these profit margins. At the expense of one’s missionsubverting the intended purpose of its tax-free status.
