WASHINGTON (apro) – U.S. President Joe Biden has again rejected calls from members of the Democratic Party and about 16 federal lawmakers to abandon his re-election bid against Republican Donald Trump in the November 5 election.
“I beat him once, I’m going to beat him again, and I’ve got a lot of work to do; we’ve made a lot of progress, and we’re going to make more progress,” Biden said at a news conference closing the 75th annual meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
President Biden, aware that Democratic and Republican leaders and the Trump campaign are monitoring his press conference performance, looked in much better shape than he did at the June 27 presidential debate.
However, in response to the first question, Biden made another mistake when answering whether he thought Vice President Kamala Harris, who replaced Trump as the Democratic presidential standard-bearer, was capable of defeating Trump.
“I would not have chosen Vice President Trump as my vice president if I did not believe she was qualified to be president,” Biden responded in an apparent name-confusion that was seen as a mistake by those who are demanding he put aside his desire to be re-elected in November.
Prior to the news conference, Biden said that when introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the end of a NATO meeting, he had confused his name and when calling him to the podium he introduced him as Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.

Most of the questions asked by the 12 reporters selected by the White House emphasized the fact that Democratic leaders and a large number of citizens are demanding that he give up his candidacy.
One of the questions they asked the US President was how he would view his legacy if he were still a presidential candidate, meaning Trump would win the presidential and general elections on Tuesday, November 5.
“I’m not doing this for a legacy, but to finish the job I started, and the economists say I’m doing a good job; if I’m re-elected, it will be much better,” the president noted, unable to hide his irritation at such questioning.
At a news conference that began 52 minutes late, a reporter selected by the White House asked the president if he would be willing to undergo neurological tests if they told him that his cognitive abilities were poor enough to forget about his candidacy.
“Yes, I take the test, I’m healthy, I have a problem with my left foot because I broke it, I pass the neurological tests that I do every day; no one suggests to me that I’m wrong, that’s OK, they won’t be satisfied,” Biden responded.
I also insisted that he was determined to continue his re-election campaign, and he insisted that he would go out and continue to preach, although he clarified that he planned to take more rest so that he could guarantee greater support from the voters to win in November.
One reporter who asked the president a question highlighted an issue in which Trump confused Harris at the start of the meeting by saying he would leave the candidacy to the vice president if she had a better chance of winning than he did.
“I’m not going to reconsider (dropping my candidacy) unless they tell me I can’t win. Nobody told me that,” Biden said.
81% of the public want him to withdraw from the election
Hours before the news conference, ABC News, The Washington Post and Ipsos released a survey of likely voters in which 81% said the president would abandon the Democratic candidacy.
The final question they asked Biden was about his confusion between Harris and Trump during the first questioning, which the former president and Republican nominee has used to discredit him and highlight his mental incapacity.
The US President’s response at the press conference was “listen to Trump.”
Next week, July 15-19, the Republican National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Trump will be formally nominated by the party as its presidential candidate, and he is expected to use the convention to discredit Biden as an elderly man with Alzheimer’s, among other things.
The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago, Illinois from August 19 to 22 this year. Biden intends and hopes to be nominated as the party’s presidential candidate again, and Harris as the vice presidential candidate.
