St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): As the new school year approaches, Joshua Obadiah Williams Elementary School staff and students will continue to use temporary housing at the Explorers Youth Club headquarters.

Although it has been more than two years since the fire struck the school building, officials are still making sure the requirements for rebuilding are followed.

Melva Walters, director of the project and construction management department at the Ministry of Education, said the bidding process has been launched and completed.

Walters said the project is divided into three parts and a tender invitation has been issued. Interested contractors submitted their tender documents to the St. Kitts Department of Public Works and the evaluation of the bids began on Wednesday, August 21. Once the evaluation process is completed, the procurement committee will make a decision.

While no timeline was given for a complete restoration of the agency, Public Works Director George Gilbert initially said the project would be expedited.

According to investigators, an arsonist set fire to a portion of the school on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. The fire caused extensive damage to the ceiling, walls, and doors. There may have been other issues prior to the fire, including cracks in the walls and the need for electrical upgrades. Therefore, the decision was made to rebuild the entire facility.
