China said yesterday it had lodged a formal complaint with Japan over a former defense minister’s visit to Taiwan, warning Tokyo that it was a “red line that cannot be crossed.”
In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the Taiwan issue concerns China’s fundamental interests, affects the political foundation of China-Japan relations, and is a red line that cannot be crossed.
Chinese diplomacy stated that “there is only one China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory”, and therefore China “rejects any form of official exchanges between countries having diplomatic ties with China and Taiwan.”
The same note also recalled that “Japan colonized Taiwan for half a century and committed countless crimes, leaving a deep mark on history.” In this context, the statement urged Japanese politicians to “not forget the lessons of the past, recognize that there is only one China, and respect the ‘one China’ principle and the political agreements between the two countries.”
Former Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who is currently traveling to Taipei with Japanese representatives, stressed the importance of avoiding any conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
During a meeting with Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te, Ishiba stressed that Tokyo’s priority is to ensure that “there will never be a war” in the region. Ishiba also announced his intention to run for prime minister if he gains enough support in the LDP.
