These days, a high-profile event in Beijing showcased robots that looked… incredibly lifelike.

Some are created to provide companionship and domestic help, others know how to play musical instruments and perform martial arts. Humanoid robots are becoming increasingly “intelligent” thanks to artificial intelligence. Chinese manufacturers say we will start to encounter them more and more in Chinese homes.

A robot that looks like a young Chinese woman is being promoted as the perfect companion for those who feel lonely. It moves with the help of a wheeled platform, understands the language of smart appliances and controls them when necessary. The robot is equipped with artificial intelligence so it can hold conversations with humans.

Li Boyang, founder of EX Robots: “In the family, it is essential to share feelings and receive emotional support. Therefore, there is a need for a robot that can play the role of a personal assistant to accompany the elderly living alone or families with children.”

The company that makes the robots also brought a robot to the Beijing expo that resembles Su Shi, one of China’s greatest poets.

Over the past year, Chinese experts have made significant improvements in facial expressions and movements. In addition, they have equipped humanoid robots with artificial intelligence.

The manufacturer has already sold several hundred of the humanoid robots. Another 500 will be delivered by the end of this year.

Another robot is expected to be a great home helper. It cleans and prepares meals. It is also proficient in martial arts and can play a musical instrument.

Astribot founder Lai Jie: “I think in the next three years, robots will start to appear more and more in our homes. In terms of cost, I dare say that in three years, ordinary people will be able to afford robots.”

Chinese developers say they envision a future where robots and humans live together – just like in the movies.

Guo Peng, IT expert: “In everyday life, there is a lack of direct contact and human emotions, which robots can fill.”
