The close coexistence between Guatemala and Mexico is historical, not only because they share a common border, but also because of a common social dynamic. Of course, the proximity of the territory is decisive, but even more important is the relevance of the environment.
In this sense, when Pedro de Alvarado attacked in 1524, he was accompanied by warriors from Tlaxcala and Cholula who contributed to the conquest. Mexico was briefly annexed four months later after the unique “independence” decree of 1821. The liberal victory of 1871 was based on the logistics of the northern border.
During the internal armed conflict, especially from the 1980s onwards, southeastern Mexico allowed 45,000 Guatemalans to settle as refugees. This reception was favored because hundreds of Chapina families had entered Mexico to work on the coffee plantations.
Mexico was a promoter and protagonist of the peace agreements, as five of the twelve were signed in neighboring countries, and the Mexican government was a member of the Contadora Group, an entity also made up of Colombia, Panama and Venezuela that facilitated the cessation of the war on the Isthmus.

Artists from disciplines such as literature, painting, music and sculpture stand out in the Mexican projection with the Guatemalan flag. Another relevant angle is the business one. Guatemala is one of Mexico’s main partners in Central America, among the top ten in Latin America and the Caribbean and among the top thirty in the world. Just over a hundred Mexican companies operate in our country.
In light of the above, the elections held in Mexico have a certain significance for Guatemala, especially in terms of numbers, as Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidential election with an undisputed victory. In this way, the party born in 2012 and headed by López Obrador reached the peak of power in 2018 and completed its mission to consolidate it.
The references cited about the new government are timely, considering the course that López Obrador set during his meeting with the ruler Bernardo Arevalo in May in Tapachula, Chiapas, which did not foresee changes that would alter harmonious relations between the neighbors.
It is worth emphasizing that, due to the characteristics of AMLO, it is worth thinking about how long it will take Sheinbaum to take over and reduce the influence of his predecessor, who announced that he would retire once he handed over the band; however, only the future will tell whether it happens.
Embers between hugs will undoubtedly be the theme of the multinational migration that passes through Guatemala into Mexican territory. And, despite the promises that have always been made and the usual resources provided by a third player, the United States, to reduce the flow, the mobilization continues. By the way, in the case of Guatemala, remittances from the United States with the stamp of immigration represent one fifth of our GDP.
Now that the voting ceremony for Morena and his allies is over, it is foreseeable that the Sheinbaum government will maintain communication with the Guatemalan government and relations will continue to be stable. In this environment, there will be distant noises due to immigration issues and the operation of organized crime cartels, which will stir up waves, but since there will be no storm, the calm will determine the direction.
