Both Swiss duos advanced to the knockout stage of the European Beach Volleyball Championship on Wednesday.
Quentin Metlaer and Yves Hausener lost two and three matches in the group stage. In the morning in The Hague, they lost to two local heroes, Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen (world No. 14), in 21:16, 22:24 and 7:15.
The Swiss team played well in the first set and only trailed 1:2. Then they left the front line. They won 4 points in a row to win the set. In the second round, Metlar/Hausener gave up an 11:7 lead, but they had no chance in the third set.
In the evening, Czech team Jakup Sepka/Jiri Sedlak were too strong for the Swiss pair. They lost 19:21, 17:21. On Wednesday, Metlar/Hausener unexpectedly defeated the world No. 9. From Poland, Losiak/Brill made their first appearance at the European Championships. The victory was enough to advance to the round of 16.

Krattig/Brill give up victory
Marko Kratig and Florian Brill also made it to the knockout stage. The Swiss duo was challenged only in the afternoon. They won their match in the morning after the German duo Lukas Pfretzschner/Sven Winter retired. Against Martins Pravens/Christian Fokreutz of Latvia, a balanced match and winning the first set led to a three-set defeat. They also finished the group stage in third place. It is not yet clear who the Swiss men’s doubles will play against in the round of 16 on Friday.
Swiss women know their match
The opponents of the two Swiss women’s doubles teams have been decided. In the round of 16 on Friday, Olympic quarterfinalists Esme Bobner and Zoe Verger-Despres will face German pair Sarah Schneider and Margarita Kozuch. Anouk Verger-Despres and Joanna Meder will meet Italian pair Reca Orsi Toth and Guida Bianchi.
