Red flags have been flying on the beaches of Quarteira and Vilamoura in the Algarve since Wednesday morning due to possible wastewater contamination at the Vilamoura Marina, a source at the Faro Port Authority revealed on Wednesday.
According to the captain, Mário Figueiredo, the decision was taken following a communication from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) that the Quarteira pumping station discharged wastewater from the city of Loule to the Vilamoura Marina.
“We are facing potential contamination of the (bathing) water, that’s why we are raising the red flag,” Mário Figueiredo told Lusa news agency, referring to the beaches east and west of Vilamoura’s marina bar.
The APA “advises against bathing at neighbouring beaches,” according to the maritime authority.
Commanders are currently waiting for the APA to conduct a water quality analysis before authorizing the thousands of people vacationing in the area to bathe again.
“I am sure the APA will confirm this very soon,” he added.
On the other hand, the maritime authority said the ban was “unrelated” and a “different case” from the decision taken on Tuesday to ban swimming at the Fuseta-Ria beach in the municipalities of Olhão and Amação de Pera, in the municipality of Silves, in the Algarve, due to microbial contamination in the water.
