SecondAlbados claimed a dominant victory at the 2024 CARIFTA Triathlon, Duathlon and Mixed Relay Championships held at Brandon Beach and Mighty Grynner Highway on August 16 and 17. The home team performed well in all categories and won the overall team title with an impressive 207 points at the end of the competition.
Bermuda ranked second with 180 points, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (58), Jamaica (43) and Aruba (36). Approximately 190 athletes from 12 regions participated in the competition, the largest number of participants in the event’s seven-year history.
After the opening day of triathlon, Bermuda topped the team standings with 91 points. Barbados followed closely with 84 points. Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Jamaica rounded out the top five.
However, Bermuda also triumphed in the mixed relay, scoring 42 points. Barbados scored 28 points, and Aruba was third with 6 points.

In the individual triathlon, Barbados performed well, placing top in several categories and maintaining a tight competition. But the team’s strong performance was highlighted by its dominance in the duathlon, where they took the overall title with a score of 95 to 47.
Barbados’ Fynn Armstrong and Isis Gaskin won gold medals in the Duathlon in the men’s and women’s 16-19 age group, respectively, and triathlon. The triathlon in this category includes a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run. The Duathlon includes only the swim and run.
In the men’s event, Luke McIntyre of Barbados, who had just missed out on the podium in the triathlon, finished behind his teammates in the duathlon to win the silver medal.
The Bayan duo worked together in the 11-12 season
In the girls 13-15 category, Laila McIntyre won a silver medal in triathlon and a gold medal in the duathlon, which includes a 400-meter swim, a 10-kilometer bike ride and a 2.5-kilometer run. Her teammate Isabelle Mayer also won a bronze medal in triathlon and a silver medal in the duathlon. Alexis Lashley was sixth in the same category.
Yele Renwick-Williams also won the biathlon, having won triathlon gold the day before in the boys 11-12 category. His teammate Liam Beckles came sixth. The group completed a 200m swim, 5km bike ride and 1.5km run.
Tahira Fraser of Barbados was third in the women’s category, behind Naomi MacGuiness and Colette Durkin of Bermuda.
In the 20-21 women’s category, Zahra Gaskin won gold in the duathlon to go along with her triathlon gold, while her teammate Chara Hinds took second place in the duathlon.
