Defending champions Barbados Royals Ladies (BR) will be hoping for another win tonight to secure their place in this year’s Masi Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) final and their bid for back-to-back titles.
In the match against Guyana Amazon Warriors Women in Tarouba, the Royals Women won both games and moved to the top of this year’s standings with four points.
Losing finalists Guyana Amazon Warriors Women (GAW) are in second place with two points after three games, level with Trinidad Knights (TKR) on points and games played, but trailing in goal difference (0.327 to -0.752).
The Royals began their title defence at Tarouba last Wednesday, narrowly defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors by one run with one ball remaining. Chasing 119 runs, the Royals managed to cross the finish line, largely thanks to captain Hayley Matthews’ unbeaten knock of 61. South African quick Shabnim Ismail picked up four wickets in four innings, breaking up the Royals’ batting order and making the otherwise paltry total look quite respectable.
Earlier in the day, the captain’s figures of 2-19, coupled with Alia Alleyne’s 3-21, helped the Warriors to reach 118-9.
On Thursday, Matthews was once again the centre of attention as he hit another half-century, this time scoring 67 runs, taking two wickets and two catches as the Royals beat Deandra Dodin’s Trinidad Knight Riders by seven wickets. The Knight Riders finished below par at 113-9 thanks to the team’s collective performance on the field, with Chinelle Henry, Amanda Jade-Wellington and Matthews taking two wickets each.
Amazon Warriors registered their only win of the tournament on Friday as they beat TKR by eight wickets with 16 balls left to play. The team’s overseas players Lauren Winfield-Hill and Erin Burns led the team with stellar performances with no-loss knocks of 46 and 78 respectively, easily picking up the required 131 runs for victory. Earlier in the match, South African spinner Chloe Taillon was the standout bowler with figures of 4-21.
Just two days later, the Knights exacted revenge in less-than-convincing fashion, winning a super over on Sunday to earn their first point of the tournament.
Captain Deandra Dottin reminded the crowd of her strongest side as she blasted 53 runs from 38 deliveries to help the team to a winning total of 128-8 in 20 overs. Burns scored again, making another half-century (61 runs), but it is worth noting that despite GAW holding five wickets in the final innings and needing only 11 runs to win (seven of which came from the first three balls), the match went into the Super Over.
From then on, Dottin took 13 for 4 in the Super Over, and her partner Jemimah Rodrigues scored another 6, limiting the Warriors to just 20 runs in the over. Australian left-arm spin bowler Jess Jonassen conceded just 5 runs, easily securing two runs for his team.
A win for the Barbados Royals Ladies will see them reach their third consecutive final, having lost by 10 points to the Trinidad Knight Riders in the inaugural final in 2022 before beating the Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight points last year.
