phosphorusANAMA CITY, Panama – July 17, 2024 – The Embassy of Barbados in the Republic of Panama had the honor of hosting the President of Barbados, The Most Reverend Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, FB, GCMG, DA, QC, LLD on June 29, 2024. This was the first visit by a Barbadian President to Panama and marked a historic moment in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The primary purpose of the President’s visit was to represent Barbados at the inauguration of His Excellency José Mulino, President of Panama, on July 1, 2024. However, the visit also highlighted the significant contribution made by Barbadian workers to the construction of the Panama Canal and the broader development of Panamanian society. Events hosted by the Panama Canal Authority, the Panama Canal Library and the Panama Canal Museum further highlighted the historical ties between Barbados and Panama.

The Embassy of Barbados hosted a dinner in honor of the President with the theme “Barbados-Panama, un solo Puente… (There is only a bridge…)”. The event brought together members of the Barbadian community and friends of Barbados. Ambassador Ian Walcott delivered the opening remarks and Master of Ceremonies and First Secretary Michelle Carter highlighted the President’s groundbreaking career as the “First Lady” of Barbados.

The President met with Barbadians who have made significant contributions to Panama in various fields including aviation, education and telecommunications. Guests enjoyed a cultural display of “Los Congos”, an Afro-Panamanian cultural expression, and the musical style of Trinidadian-born saxophonist and steel drum player Antonio Roboteau, also known as Panasax.

The President was accompanied by her son, Mr. Matthew Gooding, and her aide, Coast Guard Lieutenant Jamal Wiggins.
