By Ryan Gilkes (Barbados Today) The opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has sent shockwaves through Barbados politics by ousting its chairman, Dr. Ronnie Yearwood, and secretary general, Steve Blackett.
The decision was announced following a meeting of the SLP’s general council, which voted to expel the two leaders following a recommendation from the party’s disciplinary committee. The two had been suspended from their posts prior to the expulsion.
In an official statement, the SLP said: “Council considered the report and voted to expel Mr Ronnie Yearwood and Mr Steve Blackett from the party with immediate effect.”
The expulsion marks a significant escalation of the internal strife that has plagued the SDLP in recent months. The party has been struggling to regain its footing since its disastrous defeats in the 2018 and 2022 general elections, when it lost all 30 seats in the House of Representatives to the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), led by Mia Mottley.
Dr. Yearwood expressed surprise at the decision when speaking to Barbados Today.
“Like many Barbadians, I woke up to this so-called or alleged deportation,” he said. “I have not received any calls or messages from anyone claiming to be senior in the SLP. This should also indicate that common sense has gone out the window.”
