EraStruggle and resistance are an important part of Barbados’ history and a benefit enjoyed by many of its citizens today.
That’s what Labor Secretary Colin Jordan said on Thursday. Liberation Day Celebrations were held at the Liberation Village at Haggart Hall.
The day’s activities included a walk to the Bhusa statue, flower laying and several cultural activities to celebrate this important day.

Jordan told attendees that the country’s history is filled with examples of working-class struggle and resistance, which in turn led to better and fairer conditions for all citizens in all aspects of society.
He stressed that such sacrifices in the past should not be underestimated.
“The interests of the people of Barbados, the interests of the ordinary citizens of this country are built on the struggles of the working people of Barbados. What we enjoy today, we can even have a statue of Busa, we remember that some time ago there were attempts to quell it by not calling it Busa, it was a demonstration of struggle.
“I hope we always remember that everything we enjoy is the result of struggle, it was not given to us, it was not given to us by others, our liberation was not due to the kindness of anyone, and our achievements today are not due to the kindness of anyone. Our achievements today are the result of resistance, struggle, unity, blood, sweat and tears,” he said.
Minister Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight laid a wreath at the Liberator statue.
Senior Minister Dr William Duguid joined today’s celebrations.
Jordan noted that through the struggle for rights, workers have gained greater respect and their humanity has gained greater respect. shamarblunt@barbadostoday.bb
