Dhaka: Bangladesh students set fire to the country’s state broadcaster on Thursday (July 18) as protests over civil service hiring rules escalated, with the death toll rising to at least 32 and monitors saying the country had imposed an “almost total” internet blackout.
Police fired rubber bullets at hundreds of protesters, who fought back and chased the retreating police to the headquarters of Bangladesh Television (BTV) in the capital Dhaka.
Protesters burned the station’s reception building and dozens of cars parked outside, with the station saying in a Facebook post that “many people” were trapped inside, though a station executive later told AFP they had been evacuated safely.
The day before, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared on the Internet, seeking calm Escalating conflict.
“Our first demand is that the prime minister must apologize to us,” protester Bidisha Rimjhim, 18, told AFP.
She added: “Secondly, we must seek justice for our brothers who were killed.”
