Three more people were detained in the following days, with the government saying at the time that they were being detained for their own safety.
Justice Minister Anisul Huq told AFP on Thursday that all six were in voluntary police custody.
“They came voluntarily. They said they wanted to go. They were allowed to return to their parents,” he added.
Hasina’s government deployed the army, imposed a curfew and restored order. Shut down mobile internet networks nationwide 170 million were sold in 11 days.
According to local media reports, the riots resulted in more than 10,000 arrests.
‘Arbitrary and illegal’

He added that releasing the leaders showed the government was seeking to “de-escalate tensions” with the protest movement.
Demonstrations broke out last month over the reintroduction of a quota system that reserves more than half of government jobs for certain groups.
