Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Nobel Peace Prize winner and economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the country’s caretaker government on Thursday (August 8), three days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina He was forced to resign and flee the country following violent protests.

Yunus, 84, who was recommended for the post by student protesters, returned to Dhaka early Thursday from Paris, where he was undergoing medical treatment.

“This country has the potential to be a very beautiful country,” Yunus told reporters emotionally at the airport.

“Whatever path our students show us, we’re going to keep going.”

Yunus will serve as chief adviser to an interim government charged with holding new elections in the South Asian country of 170 million people.

The student movement that toppled Hasina’s regime stemmed from protests against government job quotas that broke out in July and sparked a violent crackdown that drew global criticism, although the government denied using excessive force.

Poor economic conditions and political repression in the country have also sparked protests.
