Cyclones have killed hundreds of thousands of people in Bangladesh in recent decades, driven by climate change, and are becoming more frequent, stronger and longer, scientists say.
Restaurateur Shahjalal Mia, 63, said he sees the sea “encroaching more land” every year.
“Many people’s homes have been submerged by the sea,” he said. “If there are no beaches, there will be no tourists.”
He said he had experienced the cyclone and the scorching heatwave that intensified with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius.
“We are now facing two, three or even four hurricanes a year,” he said.
“I can’t put the temperature into degrees, but simply put, our bodies can’t tolerate it.”
“It’s too late”
According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to disasters and climate change.
In April this year, the country of about 170 million people experienced its hottest month on record and its longest-lasting heat wave.
Last month, a hurricane killed at least 17 people and destroyed 35,000 homes. The fastest and longest lastingThe government’s meteorological department said.
Both events have been blamed on rising global temperatures.
Aynoon Nishat of Brac University in the capital Dhaka said the poorest people were paying for the carbon emissions of rich countries.
“If other countries, especially wealthy ones, don’t take steps to combat emissions, then we can’t do anything for Bangladesh,” he said.
Nishat added that time is running out for Bangladesh.
“It is too late to prevent the disaster now. We are not yet in a position to bring about change,” he said.
