Dhaka: Bangladesh’s chief justice and central bank governor have resigned, officials said on Saturday (Aug 10) as student protests that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee widened to target more officials appointed during her tenure.
Asif Nazrul, an adviser to the justice ministry, said in a Facebook video that Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan had resigned after students warned him of “serious consequences” if he did not resign. Reuters could not immediately reach Hassan.
Nazrul Abdullah, an adviser to the new caretaker government, urged protesters to remain peaceful. “Do not damage any public property,” he said in a post.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder also resigned, but Salehuddin Ahmed, an adviser to the finance ministry, told reporters his resignation had not been accepted given the importance of the position. Reuters was unable to reach Talukder.
A few days ago, about 300 to 400 bank officials protested against corruption among senior officials and four deputy governors were forced to resign.
