Chen Tingfu, 37, allegedly received about $5,000 for each trip abroad from Sherine Chong, who claimed to be the wife of a Dubai billionaire.
Phu and Chong were two of six Vietnamese nationals who were presumed to have died after ingesting cyanide from tea cups in a suite at the Grand Hyatt Erawan.
The housekeeper found them in the room under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday afternoon (July 16). The next day, Thai police released their photos and identities.
Police concluded it was likely a murder-suicide and Chong, 56, was considered a suspect.
She had persuaded a couple in the group to invest in building a hospital in Japan, Thai daily Kaosod English reported, citing sources.
However, they ended up losing 10 million baht ($278,000). The conflicting parties subsequently agreed to meet in Bangkok to resolve the issue.
Two of the dead — Dang Hung Van, 55, and Chong — were dual U.S. citizens.
In addition to Phu, the other three are Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan, 47, Pham Hong Thanh, 49, and Nguyen Thi Phuong, 46.
Some of the victims’ families have flown to Bangkok and are working with police to bring the bodies home.
