Nassau, Bahamas (CMC) —Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell confirmed that Prime Minister Philip Davis had been “ordered” to stay in bed after apparently disobeying doctors’ orders and overexerting himself, weeks after undergoing surgery in the United States.
“So, you know he just had surgery a few weeks ago, and as usual, we don’t listen to the doctors and overexert ourselves. So, he was ordered to stay in bed for three days. So … I apologize on his behalf,” Mitchell said in explaining Davis’ absence from a church service celebrating Fox Hill Day on Tuesday.
Mitchell, who represents Fox Hill in parliament, told reporters Davis had undergone surgery to correct his sciatic nerve and chaired a Cabinet meeting earlier this week but had “taken a break early”.
Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville said last month that Davis had undergone successful surgery in the United States after standing for months in severe pain. But Mitchell told reporters that Davis may have overexerted himself shortly after the surgery.
“He’s fine. He’s had back surgery, you know he’s been at a couple of public events and stuff like that. So, you really should be more careful. We’ve been trying to tell him to slow down, slow down, slow down. He’s going to listen to the doctors,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell added: “He’ll get back up and keep running.”
