The Belize Police Department reports that a 16-year-old teenager with autism is missing after leaving his home in Belmopan on Friday, August 16th.

According to reports, the teenager, Emery Nissani Abraham Ramos, was alone at home that day while his mother, Adele Ramos, a single mother and well-known author, poet and researcher, went shopping for school supplies with her two other siblings. While they were away, the teenager apparently decided to pack several clothes into a plastic bag and leave the house.

Later that day, he was reportedly seen trying to hitchhike at a roundabout in front of Guanacaste National Park, and on Sunday he was seen at Falcon Field Park in the town of San Ignacio.

According to Adele, Emery often visited the area because he attended the Cayo Employment Training Center (CCET) before deciding to change his educational path to be able to attend a more traditional education program.

“He was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. We’ve had to do multiple interventions over the years with counselors and different types of support, but he’s a high school graduate. This was the first time he’s done this, and the moment I saw his clothes were gone, I knew he ran away from home. Earlier that day, he was self-harming; so, he needed help. He needed counseling and support, and that’s why we needed to find him,” Ramos said.

“A few months ago, he was (self-harming) but he stopped; but this is my way of trying to get support for him to work through some of the core issues. We are still trying to get support for him and that’s why he needs to get a place where he can get support,” she added.

Reporters tried to contact Emery’s friends in the San Ignacio area, but they were unaware he was missing. He was not taking any of his prescription medications.

Adele said Emery was last seen wearing a dark gray shirt and loose knee-length pants, had a dark complexion, dreadlocks, was 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed about 135 pounds.
