The tree-lined boulevards of Montmartre are a popular nightlife destination and home to the famous cabaret Moulin Rouge. The street is filled with bars, restaurants, fast food outlets, adult shops and cabarets.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said in a statement that it had opened an investigation into “a possible gang rape that occurred on the night of July 19-20.” No suspects have been arrested so far.
“An Australian woman born in August 1998 reported the incident after taking refuge at a restaurant in the 18th Ward and was cared for by firefighters,” the statement read.

The woman, who does not speak French, was found wandering outside the kebab shop, according to local publications Le Figaro Police were told her clothes were on inside out, the report said.
Local police and firefighters took the woman to the nearby Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital.
A police source with knowledge of the case said the woman was unable to provide details of the location and circumstances of the alleged attack and was reluctant to make a formal police report as she planned to return to Australia at the weekend.
“Despite the obstacles they face, investigators will do everything they can to quickly identify these individuals and bring them to justice,” police said.
“We will use a variety of investigative techniques as well as technical and scientific police techniques.”
