The International Rugby League (IRL) has awarded Australia the rights to host the 2026 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC2026) for men’s, women’s and wheelchair events. The tournament will be the most competitive and culturally rich yet, featuring 26 teams – 10 men’s, 8 women’s and 8 wheelchair teams. The tournament will be held at top venues in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
“The Rugby League World Cup is the pinnacle of the sport and RLWC2026 promises to be the most exciting and competitive tournament ever,” said IRL Chairman Troy Grant. He praised the Australian Rugby League Commission’s (ARLC) bid and pointed to their move to Las Vegas as an example of how they are raising the bar for the tournament.
Grant added: “The culture, diversity and competitiveness of the participating countries will attract the attention of a global audience and drive the sport further.”
The 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England was postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tonga won all three group stage games but lost to Samoa 20-18 in the quarter-finals.
