As always, for Cinemateca Paixão, a new month means renewing the programming and presenting another selection of Asian films, but not only that. The highlight is the restoration of the 2001 film Millennium Mambo by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien

This month’s selection of films is titled “Amuletos de Agosto” and has already begun screening at the Paixão Cinema. One of the highlights is Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film “Millennium Mambo”, which is presented in a restored version as it was released in 2001.

The film is considered an “innovative film” in the filmmaker’s career, winning the Cannes Film Festival Technical Award and three “Golden Horse Awards” at the Taiwan International Film Festival. Both spend their nights smoking, drinking, stealing or traveling to Japan. Millennium Mambo is a film that analyzes the expectations and paths of these two characters, questioning the factor of time and its use in what seem to be two life wanderers.

A thriller will be released tomorrow, on the 15th, 20th and 25th of this month. It is Red Rooms, a film by Pascal Plante from Canada, and the protagonist Kelly-Anne wakes up every morning in the courthouse to guarantee a place in the trial of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier. She is fascinated by it.

As time passes and the trial continues, she develops a relationship with another young woman, which relieves her from her loneliness, but the time she spends in court with the families of Ludovich’s victims and her obsession with the killer helps her gain more emotional stability and balance.

Kelly-Anne then sets a new goal: to obtain the missing video of a 13-year-old girl who was murdered by Ludovic, who, oddly enough, looks a lot like her.

It all centers on Olive Hoover, a funny seven-year-old girl who is fascinated by beauty pageants and forces her whole family to accompany her to California to participate in the national “Little Miss Sunshine” competition. However, what is revealed, in addition to the attempt to express beauty in the competition, is a series of tragicomic adventures involving all the members of this dysfunctional family.
