There are still two weeks left in August, but according to data released on Monday by the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF), August is already the worst month in terms of area burned in 2024 and twice as much as July.
According to the provisional report published, from August 1 to 15, 3,484 hectares were burned, compared to 1,582 hectares in the previous month. The area burned in the first two weeks is equivalent to 44% of the total area burned in mainland Portugal this year (7,949 hectares).
The impact of the flames over the past two weeks has been felt mainly in forested areas (1,676 hectares), settlements (1,175 hectares) and agricultural areas (633 hectares), a change from last month, when a larger area was burned in settlements (732) compared to bush (475) or agricultural areas (331).
