Auctioneers in Kenya have called on the public to be more aware of their duties as officers of the court.
They say their work is guided by a strict legal framework and is vital to the delivery of justice.
Kensap national chairman Philip Kamuya stressed the importance of their work in recovering property and issuing attachment orders, many times done in challenging circumstances.
“Our members enforce court orders, often facing significant security risks on the ground,” Kamuya told the summit.
“This conference aims to address these challenges and create public awareness that auctioneers are professionals who execute legitimate court orders.”
The Chairman said that when they were at the end of the justice system, they faced challenges including physical attacks.
Maurice Osundwa of the Kenya National Auctioneers Association echoed the sentiment.
Osondwa noted that there are negative perceptions and misunderstandings among the public about the work of auctioneers.
“Bad stuff sells faster than good stuff, and the benefits we bring to the economy are often overshadowed by the emotional reactions of those we execute against,” he said.

Auctioneers will often mediate and negotiate payments on behalf of debtors so that they can repay their debts on more favorable terms.
“We are like police officers, executing the final judgment of the court. The public needs to understand that in this case, we are not adversaries, we are just executing the legal judgment.”
The auctioneer also called on the public to respect them, saying they were not only professionals but also members of society who needed to support their families.
“We make a living like any other Kenyan and we want to be seen as human beings,” Osondwa said.
He stressed the need for cooperation and understanding from the public in carrying out their duties.

The meeting also brainstormed ways to streamline the department and address the challenges they face in their day-to-day work.
The conference is one of four held annually in different parts of Kenya and focuses on the training and professional development of auctioneers.
Darius Wambua, secretary general of the Kenya National Association of Auctioneers, said the training courses were vital to ensure auctioneers abide by the law.
“Licensing, regulation, supervision and training are the core responsibilities of the licensing board,” Wambua said.
This conference is not only to solve the challenges they face, but also to professionalize their industry And maintain high standards.
“We hope that the media can help us sensitize the public and make them aware of our work so that when they see us, they don’t automatically condemn us as bad people.”

Ayeta stressed the important role that auctioneers play.
