More than 650 children from the neighbouring communities of Port Antonio and Portland benefited from a recent back-to-school event held at Card Park in the parish capital.

The event, dubbed the “Portland Paradise Weekend,” was started by Eunice Rashford, a Jamaican living in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

She has received support through her foundation from Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in Atlanta, Dr. Elaine Grant Bryan, and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines.

As a result of this collaboration, notebooks, textbooks, children’s books, backpacks, calculators and electronic learning supplies were purchased and given to the youth.

Grant Bryan said she was happy to be one of the sponsors of the event and to be able to help buy school supplies for the children. The diplomat, who was in Port Antonio for the event, said she plans to help more schools in the future.

“There was a lot of interest in me helping the schools. When I told a lot of companies what I was doing, they were willing to help me. Then I realized I could do this for a lot of schools. So I hope to come back and do more soon,” she said.

Grant Bryan noted that schools in other dioceses, especially those affected by the recent Hurricane Beryl, could also benefit from future donations.

“So I’m going to talk to some of the executives when I get back and see how they can help. Working together will have a big impact,” she said.

Grant Bryan also praised Delta employees for their role in the back-to-school effort.

“They’ve been so helpful to me in the six years since I became honorary consul. They’ve been really super helpful,” she said.

Portland Paradise Weekend was launched in 2016 as a way to attract tourists to Portland and create economic opportunities for residents of the parish.
