August 16, 2024 (Abu Kuta) – Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched an attack on a town in Al Jazira state on Friday, killing at least eight people, the local resistance committee said.
The RSF has carried out punitive raids on dozens of villages in Al Jazirah since February, after taking control of much of the state late last year. Rights groups and residents say the incursions have included killings, looting, arrests and forced displacement.
The Resistance Council said in a statement that Friday’s attack targeted the village of Qoz Al-Naqa in the Abu Quta area. It added that the RSF used military vehicles and that there were no troops stationed in the village.
RSF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Al Jazeera’s state has been experiencing a communications and internet blackout since February and faces severe food shortages.
In June, the RSF attacked the town of Wad Al-Nura, also in Al Jazirah, killing more than 100 people, according to witnesses and activists. The incident drew international condemnation and calls for an investigation.
