At least 25 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured on Sunday when Israel attacked two schools near Gaza City that were providing shelter to displaced people, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
Israel said it attacked military facilities of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which were located within the school.
According to Palestinian media reports, several buildings on the campus were destroyed in the Israeli attack. In images released by Palestinian media, a body could be seen lying in the courtyard of an affected school, and Palestinians were helping to carry the victims of the attack to an ambulance. The targets of the attack were the Hassan Salam School and the Al Nasser School.
The Israeli military said the attack on the school was aimed at Hamas militants. According to the military, the movement uses schools as hideouts for its members to carry out terrorist activities and as command centers for attacks against Israeli soldiers and Israel.
The Hamas-controlled Palestinian Authority also reported on Saturday that a school in Gaza City was attacked, killing at least 10 people. The Israeli military confirmed the attack but also said it struck a Hamas command center.
At least 44 people were killed in attacks in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to local health officials. One of the attacks also hit Al-Aqsa Hospital. Reuters noted that the attack took place a day after the next round of negotiations in Cairo, Egypt ended without any results.
The Hamas government’s communications ministry said Israel had attacked 172 sites, mostly schools, where thousands of displaced Palestinian families had taken shelter since the war in the Gaza Strip broke out last October.
