July 14, 2024 (EL-OBEID) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) unleashed a massacre in North Kordofan State on Saturday, opening fire on a commercial convoy, killing at least 23 civilians and injuring others.
The Rapid Security Forces have controlled much of North Kordofan since the early days of the war and have faced accusations of numerous crimes against civilians, including killings, looting, detention and forced displacement.
A statement released by the Sudanese Doctors Network and received by Sudan Tribune said the Rapid Support Forces “carried out a new massacre of a group of civilians in the village of Fanquqa in North Kordofan, shooting them as they were heading to the market. This resulted in the death of 23 people on the spot and several others injured.”
The statement condemned the heinous crimes committed against unarmed civilians, saying that this was an attempt by the rapid security forces to restrict civil liberties and impose an unreasonable siege, further proving the rapid security forces’ continued violations and attacks on civilians.
In addition, a bulletin issued by Nidaa Al-Wasat, an advocacy group that monitors human rights violations in central Sudan, said that the rapid security forces ambushed merchants from Fanquqa Al-Gharbiya village and other nearby villages who were heading to the “Um Sumaima” market. Initial reports put the death toll at 23 and about 10 injured.
For months, the Rapid Support Forces have been encircling El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, severely restricting the movement of commercial convoys. This has led to shortages of essential goods such as food, medicine and fuel. Communications and Internet services in North Kordofan have also been completely cut off.
