Cambodia News reported yesterday that police arrested 19 people on Saturday night, including three officials from the opposition Candlelight Party and 16 “social youths,” and then arrested four members of a group called the Khmer Student Intellectual Union Association at their offices yesterday morning. This followed at least 14 more arrests last week. Social media posts also indicated that authorities arrested multiple people outside the Royal Palace yesterday.
All the arrests were linked to protests held yesterday in the capital, Phnom Penh, demanding the government withdraw from the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle, a free trade agreement signed in 1999 and entered into force in 2004.
