I sense a cultural shift in the way the publishing world is embracing Cambodian-American stories. In 2021, Ecco Press published Anthony Veasna So’s groundbreaking short story collection, Afterpartys, opening new doors for Cambodian-American writers. The following year, the University of Hawaii Press published a large body of work by Cambodians in the Slok Khmer language and in the diaspora, and in 2023, three important books were published by Cambodian Americans.
In short, we are witnessing a boom in Cambodian American literature.
I had been waiting for this moment for some time. Growing up in Cambodia on the East Coast of the United States in the 1980s, like many new Americans, I was surrounded by white teachers and white students, reading primarily white authors. I instinctively knew that literature would be my outlet for my depression and alienation. I wanted to tell my story, to let people know what I had gone through as a Cambodian refugee in the United States. I longed to read books written by and about my people.
