27 August 2024 (Port Sudan/Darfur) – As Sudan’s brutal conflict enters its 500th day, medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has condemned the inadequate humanitarian response to the country’s escalating medical needs.
MSF stressed that in El Fasher alone, its staff had come under 84 attacks and the hospitals it supports had come under 12 attacks, highlighting the dangerous conditions facing the aid organization.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis, with more than 10 million people forced to flee their homes.
The situation is particularly bad for children, with malnutrition rates soaring due to food shortages and limited humanitarian aid. Doctors Without Borders reports that they have treated more than 34,000 children for severe malnutrition since the start of the war.
“Children across Sudan are dying of malnutrition today,” said Tuna Turkmen, MSF’s emergency coordinator in Darfur. “The help they need most is rarely available, and when it does arrive, it is often blocked.”
The conflict has also devastated Sudan’s healthcare system, with nearly 80 percent of medical facilities out of service, according to the World Health Organization.
MSF called for increased humanitarian assistance and unrestricted access to affected populations. It also urged all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians, medical personnel and facilities.
