Kolkata: Thousands of people took to the streets of Kolkata in the early hours of Thursday (August 15) to condemn the rape and murder of a doctor. Protests across India Demand for better security for women.

The discovery of the 31-year-old’s murdered body in a state-run hospital last week sparked widespread outrage, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding swift punishment for those who committed “heinous crimes” against women.

Large crowds took to the streets of Kolkata, West Bengal, to condemn the killings and held a candlelight vigil at midnight on Thursday, coinciding with the start of India’s Independence Day celebrations.

Protesters in Kolkata chanted “Take Back the Night”, called for a wider fight against violence against women and held handwritten signs demanding action.

“We want justice,” one placard read. “Hang the rapists, save the women,” another said.

“The violence against women has not stopped,” midnight marcher Monalisa Guha told the Kolkata Telegraph.

“We face harassment almost every day. But not stepping out because of fear is not the solution,” Sangeeta Halder, another marcher, told the daily.
