A recent discovery includes a beautiful sky-blue temple, a place where sacred relics were kept. The eight-square-meter room is said to have been decorated in the Fourth Pompeian style (c. 60-79 AD). Arco News.
Graceful female figures are depicted on a blue background. The four women represent the seasons. There are two allegories of agriculture and shepherding, as indicated by the plough and shepherd’s staff.
Researchers believe that the room was used as a warehouse at the time of the Vesuvius eruption; in addition to building materials, 15 amphorae, two kettles and two lamps were found.
Blue was often the color of the most sacred places in Pompeii, so it is assumed that the room was used for pagan rituals and to house sacred objects.
Archaeologists also discovered servants’ quarters at Villa Julija – completely different from the sanctuary. The small room had no ornate frescoes, but only a bed, work tools, a basket, a rope and wooden boards, their shapes preserved by the volcanic material.
