Madrid, (Portaltic/EP). – Apple and Google have expanded their direct data and file transfer service, allowing Google Photos users to send images and videos directly to iCloud Photos without having to download them, thanks to a tool that will be implemented next week.
The collaboration is part of the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI), creators of the open source data transfer tool, the Data Transfer Project (DTP), which is open source and free for developers to use.
DTP contemplates the development of a common framework for transferring data between services and applications, preventing users from downloading them directly, thus facilitating the portability of that information.
Those in charge of the initiative acknowledged in a recent statement that “for years, data migration has helped people download their data from one online service and upload it to another,” which is why portability is now “an expectation people have for the apps and services they use every day.”
They elaborated on this in a blog post, noting that DTP “is at the heart of DTI,” a tool that gives people “a simple way to transfer personal data directly from the internet.”
To this end, they announced that Apple and Google will automate the process of transferring Google Photos to iCloud Photos, so starting next week, it will be possible to transfer content from the native iOS platform to the Android platform without downloading it.
Apple recalls that when photos and videos are transferred from Google services to theirs, they are not deleted from the source. Likewise, they announce that this process may take from a few hours to a few days, “depending on the size of the photos and videos transferred”.
The service will be available to Apple account holders in more than 240 countries and regions around the world. Likewise, it will be included as an option in Google Takeout if the service is enabled in the Cupertino company’s account.
However, this format is not available for small or managed Apple ID accounts. He clarified: “When iCloud Advanced Data Protection is activated on the account, photo and video data cannot be imported into iCloud.”
Once the transfer is complete, users will receive a confirmation email from Apple indicating that the transfer has been completed, as described on its support page.
